Field Context

Bridging the Gap for Tea Workers in Assam

Across Assam's tea gardens, thousands of women sustain India's tea industry. They are skilled, dedicated, and essential to its success. Yet when accessing government welfare entitlements, these workers often face steep barriers.

In 2023, the Ethical Tea Partnership policy review revealed that despite numerous applicable social protection schemes, tea workers struggle to access them due to digital literacy gaps, documentation hurdles, and jargon-heavy portals.

Program Architecture

Udayini: Women in Leadership

Ethical Tea Partnership launched Udayini - Women in Leadership with support from The Republic of Tea, nurturing female leaders across Dirial and Dirok tea estates in Assam.

Through direct community consultations with women tea pluckers and adolescent girls, one realization emerged: digital tools are profoundly empowering only when designed around user literacy levels and cultural context.

Markzin engineered Unnatea to make scheme discovery fast, visual, and self-directed.

End-User Feedback

Words from the Tea Garden Community

"I used to stand outside the bank and wait for my husband to finish the work. I didn't know how to fill out the forms or who to ask. Now, with this app, I feel I can do it myself. For the first time, I feel included."
